Hampton Roads Automation (HRA) is an Industrial Automation Engineering & Consulting firm that was formed in September of 2021.  We primarily serve the Water and Wastewater industry, but work in other industrial areas as well.

Hampton Roads Automation’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program offers a comprehensive foundation for individuals seeking careers as electricians or instrument technicians. The program combines rigorous academic coursework with hands-on practical experience, while providing competitive compensation and benefits throughout the learning process.

In collaboration with HRA’s skilled professionals, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC)-Virginia, a nationally recognized organization renowned for its dedication to high-quality, student-centered instruction, delivers robust hands-on training that meets the increasing demand for qualified electricians and instrument technicians.

This program is tailored for candidates committed to building long-term careers within the automation industry.

Duration:

  • 4 Years (day or evening classes + on-the-job training)

Standards: 

  • Certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Department of Labor, in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the standards set by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

 Key Components: 

  • Technical Education: Covers electrical theory, meters, blueprint reading, safety protocols and the National Electrical Code.
  • On-the-Job Training: Hands-on experience gained while working under the guidance of skilled electricians.
  • Mentorship: Each apprentice is paired with a mentor.
  • Progressive Wages: Competitive wages with annual performance evaluations linked to pay increases.
  • Certification and Licensing: 600 Course hours + 8,000 on-the-job hours, support for the journeyman electrician exam.

Application Requirements:

  1. Eligible after completing 90 days introductory period
  2. At least 19 years old
  3. High school diploma or GED
  4. Physically able to perform work in the electrical trade
  5. Must be able to read and write in English
  6. Ability to pass a drug screening
  7. Satisfactory background screening
